A simple family lives in the Kalmyk village - Baira and her husband Congress. They love each other, they cut and sell sheep together, they keep house, they never part and they don't know any other life. And suddenly the Congress brings a second wife to the house - he promised a neighbor before his death to marry her granddaughter. The granddaughter is a young beauty, and even pregnant. Baira looks at herself in the mirror with despair - she is 40 years old...

The old man refuses to leave his native village, abandoned by other residents long time ago. To stand up to the local authorities, who have their own plans for the beautiful mountain land, he lures by deceit his son and grandchildren from Moscow – they must help him turn the village into an eco-touristic place. Elder Birdsong is an animated musical short film in which 3 elderly birds: an ailing Owl, a physically challenged native Tui, and a couple of isolated migratory Korean Godwits sing about challenges of mobility, loneliness, and self-reliance. It is through their humour and dignity that these ageing birds demonstrate their resilience and provoke us to pick up the phone and get in touch with the elderly people in our lives. The film is a collaboration between public health scholars and filmmakers in New Zealand.
